Y’all…I love Janelle Monae and I’m usually here for what she has to say. She always has something insightful to say about current issues that affect the black community, women’s rights, and respect of people. But I can’t go along with her recent statement in Marie Claire magazine this month. Here is what she had to say…
“Until every man is fighting for our rights, we should consider stopping having sex. I love men. But evil men? I will not tolerate that. You don’t deserve to be in my presence. If you’re going to own this world and this is how you’re going to rule this world, I am not going to contribute anymore until you change it,” she tells the mag. “We have to realize our power and our magic. Because I am all about black-girl magic, even though I’m standing with all women. But this year? This year, I am so carefree black girl.” – Janelle Monae for Marie Claire
I guess I’m puzzled because she is lumping all men into one category. All men are not opposed to women having equal rights and all men are not “evil”. You can’t punish a group of people based on the actions and ideas of some. It just doesn’t make sense.
Also, you can’t suggest for women to give up sex to make a point. Sex isn’t exclusive. Women crave it and need it just as much as men do. Women make the decision to have sex. Women have sex for themselves, not only because their man wants it. Therefore, abstaining wouldn’t solely be punishment for men, but it would be depriving women of something they desire as well.
Also, Janelle is making it seem like men can’t possibly live without sex. News flash, they can. They aren’t sex craving demons with no self-control. Not to mention that if every woman waited for every man to get on board with women’s rights, they’d be waiting until Jesus came back. Every man isn’t going to fall in line with what you want – be it right or wrong.
In my eyes, Janelle certainly missed the mark. I really hope she clarifies her statement because I truly don’t understand where she’s going with this one.
